Wall Tennis Ball Rhythm Basketball Dribbling Drill

 

When you are handling the basketball in a game, and a defender steps up, you need to make the right move without hesitating. Whether it is a crossover move, between the legs move, behind the back move, etc., the player needs to make the correct move. For this ball handling basketball drill, the player will be able to use 1 of 4 different moves every time the tennis ball comes off the wall before catching it. This will help to simulate basketball game moves and work on reaction speed.

Drill Name: Wall Tennis Ball Rhythm Basketball Dribbling Drill

Equipment Needed: 1 Basketball, 6-10 Tennis Balls, and a Partner.

Goals of the Drill

  • Be able to react quickly and make a change of direction move.

 

Coaching Points

  • Work on all four moves even if you are not good at a couple of them.
  • Push yourself to go as fast as you can during this basketball drill.
  • Stay low and keep your eyes up the whole time.

 

Basketball Drill Instructions

  • Stand 3-4 feet back from the wall with a basketball and have the coach stand behind with all of the tennis balls.
  • Get down into a defensive stance and begin to slide to the left while dribbling the basketball with your left hand.
  • When the coach throws the tennis ball against the wall, you must make 1 of 4 different moves, catch the ball, and then change directions.
  • The different moves are the crossover, between the legs, behind the back, and reverse between the legs.
  • You don’t have to do the moves in any order.
  • The coach needs to make sure that they throw the tennis ball to the side that the ball is on because that is the hand they will be catching with.
  • The coach can also determine the difficulty of the pass, depending on the age and skill level of the ball handler.
