Kevin Sutton Curl Warm Up Basketball Shooting Drill

Kevin Sutton Curl Warm Up Basketball Shooting Drill

Practicing the correct footwork coming into a shot can really help the shooter improve their shooting percentage. So much of a shot is determined before the player ever even touches the ball. This is especially true when talking about using down screens and getting squared up and on balance before shooting the ball.

This warm-up basketball shooting drill will allow the player to get multiple repetitions coming into a curl shot from different spots on the floor. It is a great basketball drill to use at the beginning of a workout to really work on the correct footwork when using a curl cut and coming into a shot.

Goals of the Drill

Coaching Points

  • Aim to have the same footwork on every shot.
  • This will help to develop that great muscle memory that shooters need.
  • Make sure that you are getting squared up to the basket and shooting the ball with balance every time.

Basketball Drill Instructions

  • Place 3 chairs in a row on the wing.
  • The first chair will be just outside the block, the second chair will be a few feet further out, and the final chair will be out towards the 3 point line.
  • All of the chairs will be numbered (1-3, the closest chair being number 1).
  • The player is going to start on the block, and the rebounder will be by the basket.
  • When the drill starts, the player will shoot a bank shot off of the block.
  • The partner will call out chairs 1, 2, or 3, and the player must curl whatever chair number is called and then receive a pass in the middle of the paint for a shot.
  • The player will then return to the block for another bank shot before curling the next chair number called out.
  • Continue this pattern for the desired number of shots or time.
